Topic:
San Antonio is the only city in the US having both civilian and military level 1 trauma centers. Dr. Donald Jenkins, Professor/Clinical Division of Trauma & Emergency Surgery at UTHealth SA, and Col. Audra Taylor, Director of the Army Blood Program, will describe the collaboration between UTHealth, University Health Systems (UHS) and San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC). Together, these emergency medical facilities provide the very best trauma care available anywhere to this region and beyond. They will also discuss “Brothers in Arms”, a partnership with South Texas Blood & Tissue Center and the Southwest Texas Regional Advisory Council (STRAC). This partnership provides life-saving pre-hospital whole blood transfusions to trauma victims prior to or during transport to either UHS or SAMMC. Because San Antonio is one of the first cities to successfully implement this program in the US, the “Brothers in Arms” program is getting world-wide consideration and bringing more attention to the great work and collaborative spirit being achieved here in San Antonio, Texas.
